Omega 3-6-9 milk, butter and flour. Vegan Friendly.

I am a BIG fan of omegas and prefer to eat these oils in food-form instead of a supplement. Our bodies make Omega 9, however we need to incorporate Omega 3 and Omega 6 into our diets. If we are generally low in Omegas it is a good idea to add Omega 9 foods to your diet as well.

An new issue of concern is that the trend to eat much more Omega 6 than Omega 3, which can really throw the body out of balance. For this reason, incorporating food with proper ratios of these fats is essential. The foods listed below offer preferable ratios of Omega 3 to Omega 6 (generally 1:1-1:5 of Omega 3:6).

Omega 3- flax, hemp seeds, avocado, leafy greens, cold-water fish
Omega 6- Flax, hemp, seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, borage oil
Omega 9- Pistachios, cashews, avocado, peanuts, pecans, macadamia nuts

Here are three GREAT methods for incorporating more omegas in your diet, using the same 3-4 products: milk, flour and butter.

3-6-9 MILK

#1) Buy a bag of each of the following: raw, organic pumpkin, sunflower and hemp seeds and cashews.
#2) Soak the cashews, pumpkin and sunflower seeds for half a day (about 7 hours) and drain the water.
#3) Throw the soaked cashews and hemp seeds in a blender with some water (1:3 ratio of nuts/seeds to water works well, but for creamier versions I use a 1:2 ratio). You can also add a spoon of maple syrup or raw unfiltered honey. Divine.

Use in  oatmeal, smoothies, lattes, whatever! So yummy.
Drink within 2 days.

Other milk combinations:

  • hemp, sunflower and cashew
  • avocado, pumpkin seeds, pecans
  • hemp seeds, flax, pistachio

I like to add a splash of cinnamon and raw honey to my milk.

3-6-9 FLOUR

This is the jackpot. You use the same recipe as above just without the soaking or water.

#1) Buy a bag of each of the following: raw, organic pumpkin, sunflower and hemp seeds. Cashews and macadamia nuts are optional, yet they add Omega 9.
#2) Throw in a blender and process until crumbly. I have a Vitamix which turns my nuts/seeds into dust. A blender or processor will work fine too, only you might have slightly larger “dust.”

I use this in place of flour in various recipes such as fruit cobbler (makes a perfect crumble topping)  kale chips, pancakes, cookies and granola bars.

3-6-9 BUTTER

Just follow the recipe for flour but blend for an extra 1-2 minutes or longer. If you don’t have a vitamix or high powered blender you might have to add a spoonful of some sort of oil to get things moving. Coconut or flax or hemp oils are good options.

You can use this butter to make oatmeal bars (just add some oats and raw honey and you have the most delicious snack). My toddler LOVES them. Also great on pancakes, muffins, crackers, or my favourite option- straight out of the jar. Naughty, naughty me.

For the love of Lemons

I love lemons. As a child I would pick lemons off our trees and eat them like apples. Later in life, when I began my culinary education in raw foods, I used lemons in everything, especially desserts. It was good news for me then that, while living in  Greece, a meal rarely passed without the use of these yellow beauties.

Today I enjoy warm lemon water first thing in the morning, an hour before bed  or thirty minutes after a meal. Incorporating lemons into the diet is easy and inexpensive and considering the amount of money and time I use to prepare homemade foods for my family, lemons are my lifesaver. Here are a few additional reasons why I lam crazy about lemons:

-Extremely alkalizing. Drinking lemon first thing in the morning reconfigures your body to metabolize efficiently and to burn fat all day long. When the body is more alkaline and less acidic, it is more likely to avoid disease. (Acidosis is one of the basic precursors of disease.) This fact alone is a reason to start your day with lemon water.
-Great for your stomach and digestive system. Keeps you lean and regular.
-Antibacterial. Studies have proven that lemon juice kills the bacteria that cause malaria, cholera, typhoid, and other major diseases.
-Natural form of vitamin C, which is MUCH more powerful that the synthetic version. Helps you to metabolize calcium.
-Natural form of citric acid, 7.2%, an antioxidant that balances the body.

Drinking your lemon water with cayenne pepper or raw honey are also options. Cayenne pepper kills cancer cells, lowers blood pressure and LDL cholesterol, and immediately boosts the metabolism.  Raw honey has a various health benefits as well, however, I enjoy the tart taste of lemon water and opt to save my honey consumption for a sweet treat later in the day. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water after eating condensed amounts of lemon as there is a possibility for it to damage tooth enamel.

It is important to note that if you tend to run cold (cold hands and feet, usually feel chilly) TCM advice states that lemons are “cold” in nature and should either be used sparingly or combined with a warmer food, such as cinnamon, pepper or nutmeg. According to TCM, lemons clear heat and cause qi to descend. Lemons are recommended for nausea and vomiting.

10 Reasons I Quit Sugar

Once upon a time this little pink frosted cookie made my mouth water.  Today, with a bit more awareness about sugar, I would feel the need to apologize to my body for eating it. Here are ten reasons why I developed a healthy fear of this pretty treat.

  1. Sugar is the most nutrient dead food source in the world.
  2. Sugar causes the body to deteriorate.
  3. Sugar causes premature aging.
  4. Sugar feeds yeast and bacteria in the body.
  5. Sugar upsets mineral relationships in the body.
  6. Sugar greatly weakens the immune system.
  7. Sugar feeds cancer cells.
  8. Sugar leads to weight gain and obesity.
  9. Sugar weakens eyesight.
  10. And, for me, a little sugar makes me want more.

The good news is that even though sugar is sugar there are “healthier” forms than others. Here are fourof my favorites:

  • Rapadura is sugar extracted from sugar cane at low heat and unlike other sugars has not had the molasses separated from it. Rapadura is a whole food product  that metabolizes sower than traditional sugar and has all its vitamins and minerals intact.
  • Maple Syrup contains rich amounts of minerals, including maganese and zinc, and contains 15 times more calcium than honey.
  • Honey is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, helps stomach ulcers and is good for both high blood pressure and constipation. Honey is one of the hidden gems of the world and is best eaten raw as it offers various enzymes that are destroyed when heated.
  • Stevia is a natural sweetener made from the leaves of a plant indigenous to Brazil and Paraguay. Be sure to use ground leaves, which look like a green powder or a whole leaf extract. There has been some discussion about stevia and its effect on fertility so proceed with caution if you are trying to conceive.

Remember that with any food, moderation and variety are key.
